    Title: The Arithmancer
    Author: White Squirrel
    Rating: T
    Status: Complete
    Library Category: General
    Pairings: Hermione/George , Harry/Ginny
Summary: Hermione grows up as a maths whiz instead of a bookworm and tests into Arithmancy in her first year. With the help of her friends and Professor Vector, she puts her superhuman spellcrafting skills to good use in the fight against Voldemort. Years 1-4. Sequel posted.

This is a two-parter, a single story spread over two fanfics. Specifically, one follows Hermione from years 1–4, and the other follows her from 5–7. The premise is pretty simple: Instead of an all-around bookworm, Hermione is a math prodigy, and she tests into Arithmancy her first year (Arithmancy is about spell creation and manipulation, done through math). The overarching theme can best be described as, “Hermione weaponizes math.” The story ends at the end of fourth year. The story is completed in “Lady Archimedes,” by the same author. As the war begins, Hermione gets into more and more complicated projects, using math and muggle science to guide her spell-making efforts.

Meh, I liked this one. It's definitely in the 'almost recommended' range rather than being Library worthy. I've also resigned myself to the fact that I have no taste.

Also, it's Hermione/George, not Hr/R. So I wonder if you actually read it.

    3/5

Edit: OP corrected the post - it says Hr/R in the notification email

I do believe that might be because that is not a link to ff.net, the text of the ff.net url is a link to something else.

@MrPotter. You have one post to explain to me why I'm not going to ban you in 1 hour.

Am I missing something? Why did this result in a ban?

Seems a bit harsh, considering the internet doesn’t run in Jon’s Timezone

That's his fault for not being Australian then, I guess. Serves him right imo.

The link was deliberately disguised as a link to FF.Net but actually led to a sketchy as fuck website.

This story felt really familiar, I guess its just the title. And now that the link is actually fixed, I went and read it.

Rather, I tried to read it, but I'm really not about Hermione being in charge. I don't like people that place too much emphasis on Hermione's smarts in general. Yes, she's well read and has a good memory, but fuck this is like reading r/HPFF.

There are some fucking stupid things there.

This story is overall, a 2/5 I didn't enjoy it at all.

It did some things I liked, but it dragged a lot of stuff along for what seemed to be no other reason than increasing the tension.

Overall I enjoyed it, and I'll echo the 3/5 I gave it earlier, but it definitely has problems.

Things in Arithmancer are shoehorned into canon in completely unbelievable ways given Hermione is very different. Like that time she has an uncalled for mental breakdown just so troll could happen.

It's a 2/5 from me for these reasons: takes too long to get anywhere, follows canon where it really shouldn't given the setup while narrative makes completely unbelievable leaps of logic to do that, and lastly - the amount of utterly boring Dan and Emma stuff.

The fic had promise and the idea of in-depth look at arithmancy is appealing, but execution leaves much to be desired.

White Squirrel is cut from the same cloth as Robst and Starfox. All their shit is Hermione and muggle wankfest.

    You forgot AngelaStarCat.;)
This story ≈:hbp. Hermione sounded too grown up and social in the early chapters. The author also seemed to equate rote memory, intelligence and situational awareness. I personally did not like the way magic was quantified.
    Language and formatting were decent.

    Rating 1.5/5 down to 1/5

stargon1 also fits the bill if we're making a list. They're all competent enough writers, at least by fanfiction standards. They just write the same crap all the time.

As much as stargon1 seems to have a really weird Hermione fetish that writer actually develops interesting environments and plots. It's not just collection of bad tropes and cliche you get from most of these "Herman" writers.

Too bad the general OOC characterisation of Harry and the "interaction" of Harry and Hermione at least are so extremely frustrating. I can't even put the finger on what's exactly wrong there but it just feels twisted that it rubs me the wrong way. Without that "toxic" quirk the stories would be 3-4 category.

White Squirrel fits more into this "average" "cliched" "bland" 2/5 biotope even if the story wouldn't be "Hermans/Hermione" focused. The "Robr" kind you occasionally try to read but know that you're only wasting your time.

P.S. I say that as somebody who actually likes Harry/Hermione a lot when done right. There are just so many who just do it wrong(teeth aching cheesy or "Herman") in my eyes.
