He was eating ice cream and talking to Meciel, looking like he was talking to himself. And the girl maybe came up to him, I cant remember the specifics. Don't know what chapter.

My suggestion wasn't meant to get rid of them forever but I think this is as close to forever as you can get.

Even if someone knows they are in outer space(and how would they know that?) how do you think they're going to find them? The sheer volume of space between the Earth and the Moon is mind-boggling, it would be infinitely harder to find it there than anywhere on the surface of the Earth.

Now add a couple of magical protections(like Fidelius) and they would be as well hidden as it gets. You can't track them Dresden-verse style because you won't have any magical connection to it(unless you have a shadow of a Fallen within your head but you can't hide a coin from someone like that anyway; or maybe its True Name or something). Finding them physically is absurd, you'd spend thousands of years scouring the orbit for them. Fidelius(and perhaps other charms) protect them from Potter-verse magic.

Divine(or Hellish) Intervention aside, they're as protected as you can get and it's well within the reach of what Harry can accomplish.

But why settle for second best? A deep space probe is even more of a needle in a haystack than the space between the Earth and the moon, and much harder to reach even if you do know where it is.

Truth be told as long as Harry is around, I could see Harry taking the coins and letting them loose for a year or two. Then hunting them down again for sport. I mean the guy gets bored easily.

And after defeating Voldemort he will need to keep his skills sharp. A couple of Denarians is a good practice :-/

I read your comment and started thinking about how the Denarian series is almost over... Then I realized that Shezza might have more in store after Voldemort and the Ministry (though I suspect that the Ministry part will be minor, as they are incompetent): the Black Council... Do you think they'll be happy about there no longer being any Denarians around?

It would be harder to reach, most certainly.

But I don't think it would be harder to find. Space probes do have some sort of communication with earth, they need to transmit information after all. I think that this would allow for you to pinpoint the location of them with a far greater accuracy then just "somewhere between Earth and Moon".

Admittedly, if you managed to have a deep space probe that would actually drop off the coins, say somewhere around Saturn or something, that would be a better hiding place but the Apparition plan has the advantage of being doable whenever Harry feels like it, instead of waiting months or years for a NASA project(there's also no risk of the coins screwing up the hardware).

I guess it's just a question whether the huge distance and the risks are better than the nigh-impossibility of locating them.

Once Voldemort is dead, the series is pretty much over, i'm afraid.

They stop communicating after a certain amount of time.

I was speaking from a larger viewpoint. Sure, throwing them into space would work for centuries, maybe millennia, but they would return. For as long as humanity expands, our technology will allow us to stumble across them. And it's not like one would have to actively look for them, they do well enough being found by accident. Distances in space are incomprehensible now, but they will become insignificant sooner or later.

Also, I understand they would be hard to find (yes they're small compared to the distances involved) but just imagine: space scrappers? Maybe thousands of years in the future there are groups of people who use fancy metal detectors to search for specific metals. It goes beeping in some direciton and they find an ancient probe containing shiny gold coins... yes it's out there but I'm not talking about some specific time in the future. It's possible. All I'm trying to say is you cannot remove the coins from existence, except perhaps via a black hole, but we don't really know what would happen if they wound up in there...

Not to mention the distinct possibility of Aliens in the Dresdenverse. As for the coins falling into a black hole, I have the feeling that would be something capable of destroying them. In which case we have 29 free Fallen. If not, the door would 'break' seconds before the probe got caught and the coins would go tumbling.

With all this talk of Denarian coins, I have to wonder:
We've seen Denarian! Knight of Cross, but what would a Denarian! Winter Knight or Summer Knight be like?

Mab's mad at the Denarians and working for Summer would be somewhat counterproductive.

Doesn't have to be in the series. I'm talking Canon.

    Might not be possible.

A Faerie Court's Knight is their representative in the mortal world. A Denarian isn't a part of the mortal world.

Meh, the Knight of the Cross aspect really was the counterbalance to the Denarii's initial hatred, anger, and pretty much anti christian morals.

So if we were to see a knight of one of those orders, most likely they would be depraved, brutal and disgusting. For winter at least. Some people here would dig that, most likely.

For summer, just as brutal, but they would smell like flower's when they raped you over. :p

But they still have a set trajectory and a bit of math would allow for you to locate them with great precision.

And anyway, while I'm no expert on Deep Space Probes, wouldn't the added weight(assuming Harry sneaked the coins in somehow) make the probes deviate from their course? The distance is mind-bogglingly enormous, over billions of miles even the smallest initial difference could become huge.

This raises the risk of the probe falling onto, say, Jupiter and I think that this kind of harsh environment would eventually destroy them, thus freeing the Fallen(in Dresdenverse anyway).

Like I said, it's a question of whether the sheer distance is worth more than not knowing where they are. Plus it's riskier and requires greater resources to pull off.

Like I said, it's not really meant to lock them away forever. But:
    A) They would be locked away for a really long time.
    B) It's something that Harry actually has the resources to pull off - rather easily in fact. It's just a Fidelius and a couple of apparitions.

The nitpicker in me wants to remind you that they're silver. ;)

But, even if such a scenario were plausible, we're still talking Fidelius here. Could technological instruments even pick up on it? And even if they could, wouldn't the magic cause for the muggles to ignore it(unless you have magical beings on board maybe)?

Though about that black hole... Are we talking Shezzaverse or Dresdenverse? Since in Dresdenverse, the coins are actually the prisons of the Fallen, they're trapped inside. If they're destroyed that's actually a good thing for them(as non-physical entities they shouldn't have a problem getting out, unless black holes have some supernatural properties).

In Shezzaverse, destroying the coins is actually a bad thing for the Fallen as they're super-walkie talkies to Fallen that are actually trapped in the Void.

Anyway my point is that we probably should split the discussion into two parts, about Shezzaverse(and thus how to destroy them; probably a safe distance away from the Earth) and about Dresdenverse(how to contain them without destroying them).

They have a set trajectory as far as their mission is concerned. After their mission is complete they're just left to drift. As for calculating its position - well, we can't even calculate the trajectory of a leaf blowing in the wind, so I think you overestimate our ability to track it. There's a hell of a lot of stuff out there and we can't model for it all.

You're assuming it's possible to hide someone with the Fidelius against their will. Though, I suppose in this series the coins are only a connection to the Fallen, who are Outside.

I just reread the latest chapter and wanted to comment on a few things...

This line really struck me as a visible point in Harry's development. A couple months ago he would have responded much differently. In fact, I can't think of another point where he's treated a person outside the small circle he cares about (Amaris, Amanda, and Dumbledore) in such a... humane way.

When reading through the Harry/Amanda interaction, I thought of a few things:

    - Why didn't Amanda go with Harry, or at least offer to?
    - If Amanda was pregnant she'd probably know by now... The dialog doesn't reveal the answer one way or another, although I initially read an quasi-affirmative into how she was seeking Harry out...

Also, it looks like Draco may be trying to kill Dumbledore again...

Another random thought: the Black Council might be allies with Voldemort. He needs a new one, like he did after the outsider was destroyed.
