But if the charm is broken when the secret is revealed, then in OOTP, the fidelius charm would have been broken a dozen times over when Dumbledore told everybody the location of Grimmauld Place.

I think that the Secrect Keeper has the ability to drop the charm, as well as reveal it to others without the charm actually failing. i.e. Wormtail tells Voldemort about the Potter's location but not Malfoy, so only the Dark Lord can get to Godric's Hollow.

But how does that explain the problem. Even if Peter has the ability to drop the charm, the way you said it makes it sound as though he didn't, which means we still have the problem of everyone knowing where the house is. Really, the only explanation I can think of is that would make this not one huge plot hole (which I am inclined to think it is) is that either:

    OPTION 1:

1)The Potters (despite the fact this is supposed to be an extremely complex charm) cast it. (or else Dumbledore would know who the SK is even if he didn't remember the location, unless the charm makes you even forget that, but that doesn't seem right...)

2)The Potters had Peter write down the location several times (despite the obvious security risks in doing so)

3)The Potters gave Dumbledore the paper with their address on it neglecting to tell him who wrote it and he didn't recognize the handwriting.

4)Dumbledore then gave the paper to Hagrid the night of, ignoring all together the fact of how he knew that the Potters had been attacked or how the magical world had any idea that the Dark Lord was temporarily destroyed. (Those two plot holes always bugged me)

    OPTION 2

The destruction of the house negated the charm, thus informing Dumbledore that there was some problem as he could now remember the location.

I wouldn't be surprised if #1 is really the case. Of course, that is, of course, assuming that JKR did this on purpose...which we know she didn't. :)

Just to add another spanner in the works, JKR has hinted that Voldemort wasn't alone that night.

So wormtail must have told Voldemort, who took someone with him (possibly Snape due to Dumbledore trusting him so much).

If Snape had been with Voldemort he could've proved his loyalty by giving up Harry.

If she makes it so Snape was with him, I'm going to burn the book. His hatred of Black aside, he did seem to think that Black really was the secret keeper and obviously if Snape was there that night, he must have been told the location of by Wormtail.

And that just begins to cover my problems with Snape. She would create so many more problems by putting a second person there it isn't even funny. Why would that Death Eater not finish the job and kill/hurt/kidnap Harry? If another Death Eater was there, why would the Death Eaters torture the Longbottoms to find out what happened to Voldemort? Why would Voldemort trust bringing along someone else when it would raise questions about a Prophecy I doubt he wants his Death Eaters to know about (I take Book 5 as last resort type things)? Why has Harry never heard reference to another person there in his flashbacks? In fact the only good thing that would come out of it was how the Magical World knew Voldemort was dead (Ignoring why a Death Eater would go around telling people in the first place).

I'm not saying it is Snape, just that it would be a good way to convince Dumbledore.
It would be a good bargain chip, 'save me from Azkaban and I'll give you the BWL'.

I think putting someone there is just JKR's way of explaining how they got past the fidelius charm.

I mean she's done it before.
Although if I were a death eater and just seen my Lord get his ass whooped by a baby, I might change sides too.
You have to remember what type of people most DE's are, most of them deserted Voldemort when they thought he was dead.

Obviously not too loyal, so it could've been anyone.

    Litha

p.s I've not really considered the next book, because it'll just mean disappointment.

While everyone's talking about the little details, why don't we bring up Harry's radical new personality transplant in book6! We go from depressed! angry! Harry to perky! I've got a raging monster in my chest! and, dare I say it, Fanon! Harry with out the least bit of an explanation why. JKR's excuse of him needing to get over Sirius' death for the sake of blablablah does not add up in my book.

Anybody who has ever lost somebody know this is not very likely.

My grandfather died recently of lung cancer, and I was pretty close to him. I was depressed and angry for a bit, before I went back to normal. That may be because he was in the hospital for a while and we were kinda expecting him to die...

We see no eveidence of this, though. And with the way Harry's personality was developing in book5, that reaction makes no sense. The way things were going it would of made more sense to see an I'm-going-to-rip-your-still-beating-hearts-out-you-inbred-DE-shitfucks! Harry! rather than the poor characterization JKR presented us with.

Not that it's necessary to have him angry at the world, but when an author feels the need to change a character's personality (and a main character nontheless) to the extreme in order to fit in with a preconcieved plot - I start smelling plot holes and a lack of good planning.

    Your point being?
What kind of reference do I have to make out of this tearjerker? That you were fucked up right from the start? :)

The series got worse by every book added to it since the bloody tournament. I for one, ain't waiting for the seventh.
    I despise canon!Harry.
The only thing that keeps HP standing for me are communities like this one and the highly entertaining fan fiction that it produces.

I doubt that JKR will be able to tie up all of her loose ends in this last book. And on top of that, she's sending Harry on the classically cliche 'hunt for the holy grail' type of plot. She's taking the old SF way out of writing a decent ending.

    Ditto.

I actually lined up at midnight to buy this fucking book, and was so disappointed it took fanfiction to cheer me up.
It was like seeing your favorite car being crushed in a crusher.

If it wasn't for this site I'd probably not bother with HP again. It had so much promise but she screwed it up for cash.

I've read alot of fiction in my time, but none of them have been so full of mistakes, or ego stroking.

Since coming here I've read stories that could far outstrip hers, which makes me angry she screwed up so badly.

Her first four books were very reactionary, which encouraged young people to consider the impacts of racism and genocide. Also there were elements of anti prejudice, till she went fucking hormonal and money grabbing.

I hate how she's ruined a very good idea.

It's called commercialism and it has rendered a lot of perfectly decent concepts to shady parodies of their former glory.

The series was perfectly fine, until she had Harry not decide to train to defeat Voldemort Post-GoF. Harry had seen he was no match for Voldy, so why not make him do something about it? Book 5, however, had some decent spots, like the DA, which had Harry training...and...um...well...there were some other good points, I'm sure...;)

:D Yeah there was one more enjoyable element.

    UMBRIDGE versus CENTAUR FOLD

The Germans have a nice word for that one, I believe it's called "Schadenfreude".

Book6 was painful to read, plain and simple. After that, I found that I was more of a fan of the fandom than the actual series.

The only good things about book 5 imo, were the intro of Bella. Harry being a leader and standing up to weasel, Herman and Snape. Harry trashing Dumbles office.
Harry using the crucio and (I might get linched now) Sirius dying.

In my opinion Buck tooth and weasel hold Harry back (confidence wise with Herman, Intelligence wise with weasel).
Sirius just hindered Harry's descent into the Dark side ;) .

Sirius dying was actually a good thing. For one, it could of spurred Harry on to become more powerful. Two, we would have also seen him taking more action.

Of course this is all hypothetical 'cause JKR didn't do to good of a job with his character in the 6th Book.

OK, this thread is heading way off course. Get back to finding plot holes, or whatever the hell you were doing, and stop bashing the books and JKR. I know insulting on the author of a great series makes you all hard, but it pisses some people off. And if you think that making up little problems with the books and proceeding to talk about how much you hate HP because of them makes you cool or important, think again. It makes If you look like a retard. Especially since this whole forum is dedicated (mostly) to Harry Potter.

If you want to critique something, I suggest you stick to fanfiction. Maybe after you've tried writing something of your own you can gauge the quality of the books.

In that thing you call a closet. Better watch out,
The Priori goes backward correct, the most recent. Since Lily was after James, she would be more recent. This allows the Priori to show her, as she is the more Killing curse victim.

At age 11, he couldn't grasp that his mother died years before. That should have allowed him to see the threstals.

EDIT: BMM's right, get back to finding plotlines, not bashing J.K. Without her, this forum wouldn't even be here, and none of you would be getting hard bashing her.
