So, this little story idea popped in my head awhile to go and I think it has potential.

The challenge is thus: The Dursley's notice all the creepy, crackpot wizards out on the street before they can leave Baby-Harry on the doorstep and raise a stink about it and basically flat out refuse to watch the boy and plan to move away (random country here).

With no one to raise Harry, Dumbles has a dilemma. So who volunteers to raise him? None other than our favorite, lovable half-giant Hagrid. Being the creepy, crackpot wizards they are, they think it's a great idea, as he'd be raised in the second safest place (hogwarts) with a physically capable guardian.

So, Harry grows up under the eccentric guide of Hagrid and since he lives with him, he'll probably know a few of the upper years (Though they won't know he's famous).

So, thoughts? additions? Takers?

*Hagrid must stay true to character as much as possible
*Harry, while influenced by Hagrid, is still his own person and has his own personality.

Oneshot crack is the only form I could see this taking. There would have to be some ugly stretches to make it happen, but worse things have been done.

It could end in second year, with Harry taming the basilisk and turning it into his pet.

 

This would only work if Harry's only lines in the whole fic are "I'm a wizard, a thumpin' good on' at tha'."

 

Hm... I could see this working if you adjusted his personality slightly, but that rather defeats the purpose.

 

And Harry learns how much of a great man Dumbledore is from Hagrid, and together they form a fan club to celebrate the fact. :3

Also, the Marauders must be kept as pets.

 

Eh, I could see it being done as a one shot or a whole fic, but maybe that's because I've got the idea in my head. It's mostly a way to change Harry's personality and how he'd react to things. But yeah it'd probably work as snippets, kinda like Big D's What Would Slytherin Harry Do. I mean I have some vague ideas on what could differ and how to make it a presentable story. I mean, he'd still have Voldemort after his head, He might want some vengeance against the basilisk for how Tom Riddle jr. framed Hagrid, Sirius could still break out of Azkaban, and GoF could still happen (And seriously, how do you think he'd react to the dragons?). The only thing vastly different would be first year as Harry would have a bit more faith in the teacher's and Dumbledore having grown up around them and then there's Fluffy...

So I see it going either way and I'm sorry if I gave off the impression of it having to be crackfic but that was mostly me trying (and most likely failing) to be funny.

Edit: @T3t, I could Hagrid trying to raise Harry with the same mindset he uses for all the creatures he raises.

A better plot bunny would be, "What would happen if Hagrid was never expelled?"

A competant trained half giant could kick ten different flavours of ass.

Now that I think about it, it was never really explicitly stated that Hagrid was bad at magic, he was just expelled after third year.

Ectomancer has a good example of competent!Hagrid, sorta, but not quite in the vein of what we're talking about.
