Maybe, just maybe there's a reason this forum is half-abandoned, maybe every argument that doesn't end with "we can't possibly know for sure we have just interpret how we feel" has already been made.

If a person makes a stupid thread thats either intentionally or unintentionally trolling they will get reamed that's how it is, considering what I've seen of Raine in the WbA I'm more inclined to go with intentional. if you don't like it quit, and go off to some forum where everyone pussyfoots around criticism and hold hands and sing Kumbaya.

Yeah, because there has to be either 'pussyfooting around criticism, holding hands and singing Kumbaya' or 'bandwagon fail rage'...

This forum, not General but the whole of DLP, goes through phases where no one has any opinion but the first one posted in a thread. People who can't put more thought in a post than the intellectual equal of 'lol' need to not post anything. Also, people who think there's nothing to be said in General but what's already been said need to not post in General.

It's my opinion, and I'm no Mod, but it still annoys the hell out of me.

I don't think there's nothing to be said in General, I just think that it will be damn hard to think of a new topic that either is worth discussing at all or doesn't fall into the realm of fanon, Harry Potter seems to be one of the few book series were the fanfiction is often better than the fiction.

General isn't helped when random trollish shit like this is posted, I'm not jumping on the bandwagon, I specifically addressed the troll to show her that this shit isn't going unnoticed and if I see it, who else does?

Like it or not, there just isn't much to discuss in the canon HP universe nowadays and shit like this dies help- at all.

Well... I don't know about "often". Even if there are something like 300 fanfics better than canon, that's still something like one in every 1600.

I probably should have phrased that differently. The point I was trying to male was that compared to other universes were there are literally none (or a few hiding on some Yahoo Group somewhere) HP is chock full of them.

Mah, I was archive diving when I ran across this again. Now normally, I wouldn't post in this, because it's so far down in the pile and what have you. However, I will this time, because it's my thread and I have something to say, damnit.

I won't go and answer everything quote-for-quote like I normally do, because that would be way too goddamn long. But, that being said, I will answer why I didn't respond after posting. I checked back on the thread the day after I posted it, and all I found was mockery and general shit-flinging. I figured that the thread was probably going to die before even hitting page 2 and never go anywhere, and thus labled it a failure and forgot all about it. At least until I ran into it just now while on an archive binge. I never thought it would get past page 1, let alone to a page 3 with the way it was going, so I hope you can forgive me for just walking away and forgetting about it.

Given all the things that have been said. . . you're all certainly entitled to your opinions. However, I feel the need to clarify my point, as there apparently has been some miscommunication here. I'm not defending the animals, or even suggesting that it's wrong to eat meat. Not in real life, anyway. I love cheeseburgers waaay too much for that. With bacon and sausage and crab meat and whatever-the-hell-else kind of flesh you can stack onto it without causing an explosion. I'm just pointing out that, in the Harrypotterverse, there is some evidence that suggests that animals might be as sentient as we are, or at least in the same general ballpark, and that the only reason your trigonometry teacher wasn't a gorilla is because nobody but gorillas can speak gorilla, and vice-versa, with the occasional exception in a few wizards here and there.

And seeing how the humans in the HPverse do the exact same things to animals that we do in Real Life, that essencially makes us low-carb versions of the Great Old Ones. Especially seeing how we have magic, and the baboons and cows don't.

As for the lack of clarity and abuse of images in my OP, in my defense, I made the OP at like five in the morning after having not having slept for 48 hours. On a related note, some motherfucker needs to invent teleportation or Super Mario warp pipes, because I HATE FLYING. Goddamn, but that was some fail.

In all honesty, I think the idea has merit. Not just because I think it's a valid point to consider when a reasonable, intelligent person suddenly discovers that they can hold intelligent discourse with an entire suborder of animal species, but also because it allows us to plausibly cast this guy:

As the newest DADA teacher. You can't tell me that having Gorilla Grodd show up in glasses and a tie to teach Defense wouldn't be awesome.

Probably. On the other hand, I think I'm entitled to a response, late or not, given the three pages of LOLFAIL and general accusations of trolldom. That, and most of you didn't seem to get my point, stoking my desire to clarify. Which I don't blame you for, by the way. That was my fault. Well, technically the airline's fault, but it was my decision to post a thread during the 'hallucinations with your waking eyes' stage of sleep deprivation. Not the wisest move, that. I would recommend strongly against it, should you ever find yourself in such a position.

It was funny to see Zeph's name get dragged into things while Scribbles constructed elaborate theories of epic trolldom in violation of his own statements to 'not feed the troll,' though. That was more than worth the insults.

I'm so glad that the first thread I read this morning is quality, filled with gripping subject manner that makes me glad I opened it. Stupid shit like this is what IRC is for, or you could of at least found funnier pictures.

But yes, if all animals = HP snakes level of thought, then we're the most monstrous fucking beings to ever exist.

    "BUT I DONT WANNA DIE!1!"

Shut up and get in my Big Mac.

Am I the only one who had a big chuckle over this mental image?

OP, the reason why it's not a valid point to consider is because taking a small plot point to its most logical extreme completely sucks the fun right out of the fandom. If I start having to worry about my steak's former thoughts on physics, I'm also gonna have to worry about underage rape at Hogwarts (via rape-y spells such as full body bind, Imperio and Obliviate), the MASSIVE potential for Muggle abuse aside from the plain old torture and death our cookie cutter bad guys enjoy (why wouldn't Lucius Malfoy Imperio Bill Gates into handing over his entire fortune? or at least a large chunk of it?), or how such a thing as a poor wizard making ends meet ends could possibly exist given magic's ability to wipe out a lot of scarcity related woes.

I don't want to think about those things which is why I won't be seriously thinking about your point re: animal intelligence in HP.

This thread reminds me of this, from John Dies at the End:

Hear animals talk? Eat them anyway. :awesome

I wish I could talk to my burger to tell it how delicious it is while eating it.

    Kinda like this.

    "Eat me! Eat me! Yes!"

Okay, my decrepit husk of a conscious chose this bloody passage to act up at, so I'm going to have to ask: Is John Dies At The End actually any good or should I be resigned to seeing that as the best it can offer? Books that tug brutally and efficiently on my heart strings are the most fun to read. :awesome
