4 year old thread, damn. I just marathoned this show and finished the second episode of season 5. Up till this point I loved it, but I can't say I'm enjoying Hagen blackmail Neal. It seems like that's the plot line for the season too. :\

Anyways, anyone still watch this? Does it get better? New handler, Moz's real identity is dead, getting blackmailed by Crowley. Things are going shitty for them.

I stopped watching at ep 2 too. After the whole Peter and Neal relationship degenerated to s1 status, i kind of lost interest.

I still try and keep up with this show but it's getting progressively more difficult for me. I know this is a weird complaint but what drives me so nuts is how easily Peter seems to catch on to literally everything Neal does. I get that he knows Neal extremely well and all that crap but it's just hard for me to believe in the whole master criminal conman thing when all of his plans are figured out by Peter inside of a couple episodes max, just once I'd love to see Neal and Mozzie pull off something huge and Peter just never figures it out or it takes a season bare minimum. It takes so much of the fun out of watching Neal work his magic under the FBIs nose when Peter basically whips out a crystal ball when no one is looking and learns everything is Neal is up to.

Personally I like that part about it. Every other "genius" consultant procedural has the actual Detectives/Special Agents be barely competent. Monk, Mentalist, Sherlock, (Psych to a degree, it's not exactly your normal procedural), etc. They all overshadow the actual law enforcement officer. They're the ones that break the case, they're the ones that find the big clues. The officers are just along for the ride.

In White Collar the dynamic is different. Peter is just as smart as Neal, just not as knowledgeable at the various aspects of forgery and such like Neal is. Both of them usually reach the same conclusion at the same time about a case. It's refreshing. And honestly, the show would be boring without Peter being as smart as Neal. If Peter were just another average Joe then Neal would get away with a hell of lot with no complications. And, of course, the complications make the story interesting. And in S05E03 Neal pulled off that heist without Peter even being suspicious. So there's that.

What's bothering me is Neal regressing back to being a thief. It's because of blackmail, to be fair, but it's ruining his relationship with Peter, which is a major part of why this show is so good. Was so good.

I'm also sad that Sara isn't in the show anymore, I thought that their dynamic worked really well too. :\

That's fair enough, I suppose I should clarify that when I said that I didn't mean that I wanted Peter to be a moron or anything, it's just no fun to me when Neal and Mozzie come up with some brilliant scheme and before anything even happens you already know that it's just a matter of ticking off the hours until Peter figures the whole thing out.

    Also
About Sarah, I liked her but personally I preferred Alex over her and I don't know how far caught up you are in the show but I loved Rebbeca the most. It sucked she turned out to be a bugfuck crazy psychopath.

As for Neil regressing to being a thief, I would be upset if it was just him being a greedy bastard but to me at least his motivations were almost completely noble so Im fine with it. Thanks to his scumbag dad Peter was just about as screwed as it was physically possible to be so Neal came to the rescue the only way he knew how and the blackmail would have not only fucked him over but Peter as well. I just saw it as him trying to protect Peter more than himself.

There are a few times where Peter catches onto Neal being sneaky in the most contrived ways, though it was refreshing to have law enforcement be more than just accessories.

Neal is actually a consultant, you know, not the one carrying the team.

I don't think they were contrived. Well, actually, the latest one was. S05E01 Peter gives Neal a new anklet because he suspects he somehow found a way to circumvent it. Granted, he did, but Peter had no way of knowing that. He just guessed because he saw Neal in the same place for 4 hours.

Obviously, Mozzie cracking the anklet was only in the episode in order for the heist to work and they HAD to give Neal a new anklet or else a lot of the tension of the show would be gone. But it was still kinda insulting that they did it that way. It was so obvious why it happened and it was contrived the way Peter figured it out. And the new anklet just happened to come out with an entirely new chipset... even though no one had ever broken the old anklet before (except for Mozzie, but no one knew that).

Ugh, I mean, I'll probably end up watching the rest of S05, but I'm not getting my hopes up. I don't like regression in characters at all.

Double post, but HOLY SHIT. This last episode really, really threw me off the series. Maybe for good.

It was the one with the corrupt psychiatrist with the end having Neal say he's getting back into the criminal life and cutting all ties off with the FBI and Hagen.

    Just what the fuck.
