Discuss possible prompt ideas for the next competition!

EDIT: Prompts that get the most 'thumbs up' votes are more likely to go into the next poll, so if you're going to list more than one prompt be aware that it might be tricky to figure out which one was popular.

These can be any kinds of prompts. Two basic types are the first line prompt and the idea prompt, below.

First line prompt: "Harry," Ron asked. "What are we going to do with the body?"
Idea prompt: Harry discovers why Albus doesn't drink.
    Concept prompt: Azkaban.

In the future staff will use this thread as a way to get ideas for prompts that go into the competition poll. Thumbs up the ones you like or post new ones.

Please limit discussion in this thread to prompts, prompt ideas, and other things relating to prompts. For discussion about the competition itself please refer to the relevant competition thread.

Taure's post on what makes a good, basic prompt.

Here's a few to comment on and/or discuss. Copy/pasted from various ideas tossed around in a staff discussion.

    Prompt Ideas:
    • Harry discovers Gideon and Fabian aren't dead.
    • Hogwarts closes and Britain adopts a master-apprentice system.
    • Snape is forced to teach Harry his favorite charm.
    • Muggle studies field trip.
    • In this new world, true death must be earned.
    • Tom Riddle got the DADA job yet Voldemort still operates from the shadows. This year the chosen one enters Hogwarts and Tom will find out who it is.
    • Harry can travel back in time, but only while he's blind drunk. When the drink wears off, back he goes to the present.
    • Turns out Luna was right about everything.
    • As a final defense, Hogwarts seals herself for 10/20/whatever years, with everyone still inside.
    • In the back of his mind Harry had expected his animagus form to be something noble or useful, perhaps a raven or a wolf. He had not been expecting this. Still, it came with some unexpected benefits.
    • Harry's world tour: Voldemort's dead and school's out. Harry takes off to explore some of the more interesting corners of the magical world.
    • There are some aspects to being part Veela that Fleur tries not to talk about.
    • Death Eaters raid the twins joke shop. The door swings shut behind them. Let the games begin.
    • Hagrid had really gone too far this time.
    • The doors to the Great Hall were going to open any minute, and there was no place to hide the body.
    • At that point, Harry was certain; the Japanese were weird.
    • Of all the places to conduct a secret love affair, the middle of the pitch at the Quidditch World Cup was probably the second worst.
    First Line Prompt Ideas:
    • It was a searing day in August when Diagon Alley died.
    • "It wasn't your mother I loved, Potter."
    • Harry, Ron, and Hermione stared at each other from their designated points on the triangle.
    • Immortality is not something a sane man would wish for. Believe me.
    • Umbridge's body was going to be a problem.
    • The twins were running and that was never a good sign.
    • "Harry Potter is a myth."
    • "I don't regret any of it, even the bit with the-"
    • Hogwarts looked so pretty on fire.
    • "Fuck magic," Hermione said.
I've highlighted some of my personal favorites in orange.

My mind went straight to slash when I read that. Sometimes I worry about what fanfiction has done to my brain.

My two favourites out of Cheddar’s list are definitely "Muggle Studies field trip" and "Harry Potter is a myth." Not least because I have toyed with both in the past.

"'Fuck magic,' Hermione said" could also be good fun.

    I still owe you one!

I'm now working on one for the past prompt - if I ever finish that one, and I'll try my hand at this one just for shits and giggles. Humor is a genre I've yet to try my hands at, and I am rusty.

This one in particular I find interesting; if the seal functions akin to a type of 'time vacuum' (similar to Sleeping Beauty) it has a lot of potential to take Voldemort's Reign to a new dimension. However, if the people trapped inside age along, it has the posibility for a strange sit-com type of scenario where many things happen but nothing ever really changes.

Bumping for the idea posted in the Q2 2018 thread:

Single word prompts, such as Azkaban or Politics. Thoughts? They leave things much more open. Future winners should consider making your prompt a general concept prompt but being this open with it - but don't feel obligated.

I'll see about getting the staff prompt option in the poll to be something simple/open like this next time if no one else does it.

I am wholeheartedly down for single word prompts like those. Less constraint IMO and more freedom.

So folks... Start suggesting these single word prompts. I'll come up with a few but I admit that I personally prefer more specific ones.

    • Azkaban
    • Politics
    • Herbology
    • Knockturn Alley
    • Goblins
    • Slug Club
    • Wandlore
